Selling U.S. Beef Worldwide
Selling U.S. Beef Worldwide
Beef Checkoff Program marketing efforts reach more than 80 countries
Research indicates that the Beef Checkoff Program’s “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” ad campaign has tremendously strong recognition in the United States – with about 85 percent of U.S. consumers recognizing it. And while that offers strong results for producers who invest their hard-earned dollars into the program, it actually addresses just a small portion of the checkoff’s target audience, considering that about 95 percent of the world’s population is outside the United States.
That’s why the Beef Checkoff Program has invested in an integrated marketing program that reaches all corners of the globe. In fact, the Beef Checkoff Program helps market U.S. beef in more than 80 countries, with nearly as many ways to promote beef as there are destinations for it:
- In some markets, penetrating the hotel-restaurant sector is critical, and this requires education of chefs and food service staff.
- Other countries have highly active and mature retail sectors, where the focus is on gaining visibility in the meat case by developing and merchandising cuts that appeal to local consumers.
- The processing sector is another critical destination for many beef cuts, and checkoff dollars also help out U.S. processed beef products on the world’s table.
- Advertising, tasting demonstrations and tradeshows all are critical to the growth of U.S. beef exports. Effectiveness of these programs has been increased through development of new products, recipes and preparation methods tailored for local cuisine, and through proper training of demonstrators and sales staff.
Of course, anyone who cares about selling beef knows that the discovery of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in an animal in the United States. on Dec. 23, 2003 set the United States back in the global beef marketplace. But the continued diversification of U.S. beef products – much of which is funded with checkoff dollars – is helping to make a full comeback imminent by creating new revenue streams for producers and processors in the international marketplace.
New BSE-related rules for trade have increased U.S. costs of production by requiring additional processing and record-keeping procedures. While these requirements add complexity and cost to beef production, they also offer another opportunity for differentiation and diversification.
“If you can get more value in the marketplace, that just pulls more dollars back into the total system, and hopefully cattle prices will go up,” said Paul Clayton, vice president of export services for the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), which contracts to manage foreign-marketing programs for the beef checkoff.
“The way we look at it is that foreign markets are value-added markets.… A simple equation people can think about is with variety meats, which is not something that is consumed in the United States, but once we move those into foreign markets, they gather more value, sometimes as much as five or 10 times their value in the United States.” Short-rib prices are a good example of this increased value overseas, as exports of this single cut adds about $15 per head to every steer and heifer slaughtered, according to USMEF.
So the next time you hear “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner,” remember that means here, there and everywhere, thanks to your Beef Checkoff Program!
