2018 Scholarship Question:

The National Cattleman’s Beef Association is leading efforts in Washington D.C. to make sure that fake meat – both current plant-based products and potential lab-produced products in the future – are properly marketed and regulated. The NCBA has been lobbying in Washington D.C., to create awareness about the safety and accurate labeling of faux meats that will be sold alongside beef products. Included In the 2019 House Agriculture Appropriations Bill is a provision that would place lab-grown fake meat products under U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) oversight. Heated discussions about labeling are currently making headlines in the mainstream media. The promoters of fake meat are taking advantage of consumers who do not know the facts and it’s nutritional benefits. What would be your proposal to clearly label and define beef amongst “fake meat” and how would you better educate the consumer on the difference?
